• This November, the Girard Free Library is holding our annual Food for Fines; the Library will offer up to $25 in fine forgiveness to anyone who donates at least two non-perishable food items to the Emmanuel Center. The last day to donate is Tuesday, November 26. 
  • Bring the family on Saturday, November 23 at 11 am for a free movie--Harold and the Purple Crayon.
  • Join us at 6:00 p.m. on December 3rd, for the Culture Book Group and discuss A Holly Jolly Diwali by Sonya Lalli, or December 4th for the Popular Literature Book Group and bring your favorite book and introduce it to others.

Library staff will lead the kids through basic recipes--from the assembly of ingredients to preparation of the food to sampling of the finished dish. Registration is required, and attendance is limited.  Please call 330-545-2508 to sign up by the preceding Tuesday so we have time to go to the grocery store.

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program is Mind, Body, and Sole. This is an interactive and educational animal program that gives participants a chance to test their own athletic ability against animals from the Akron Zoo. Kids ages 5-8 make play-doh that fluoresces under black light by extracting fluorescein from a highlighter and learning about its uses. Fluorescein has many uses in medicine, optometry, groundwater tracing, leak detection, plant science, and it has even been used to dye the Chicago River green for St. Patrick's Day.  Registration is required.

OH WOW! Science and Technology--DNA Extraction Necklaces

Kids ages 9-12 will extract their DNA from skin and saliva cells.  They will learn about the importance of DNA to all living things and the chemistry that is necessary to perform these types of extractions. They will put their DNA into a tiny vial and make a personalized necklace. Registration is required.

Trumbull SWCD's Amy Reeher will present information on our country’s majestic national bird, including how conservation efforts have provided a boost in the bald eagle's population in Ohio.  Participants will also learn what we can do to help protect the Bald Eagle and other birds of prey. It is the time of the year when garden insects invade our gardens and destroy our plants.  This presentation will present information on common garden bugs and how to control them without using harmful garden pesticides that harm the environment.  There are approximately 1 million insect species on the planet but only 1 percent are harmful.  Do you know which are good bugs and bad bugs?
